We frequently get asked on our social media channels if a person can get drunk on the alcohol content in chocolate a lot.

Our most recent inquiry came through our twitter account; “ I do not drink. I recently read “alcohol content” on the box label of Liqueur chocolates. Will I get drunk?”

Dear @ogwaldee and the person that typed this question into Google and ended up here, the answer is No, You will not start wobbling or lurch from wall to wall after you devour your Liqueur chocolates.

You will need to consume a whole load of chocolate to feel any squiffy.

Take for example a 100-gram block of Cointreau Swiss Liqueur Chocolate. Eight per cent of that by weight is Cointreau, which is around 40 per cent alcohol by volume. So that is around eight milliliters of liqueur per block of chocolate- are you still with me on the math? OKAY GREAT.  A standard shot liqueur your friends offer you right before you send those regrettable drunk-texts  is 30 milliliters so you would need to eat almost four 100-gram blocks of chocolate to get one shot of liqueur.  You would have to consume more than 700 grams of chocolate to be over the legal blood alcohol limit. To get quite drunk, most would need to eat close to two kilograms.

That much chocolate in your body would induce you into a coma caused by dangerously high blood sugar levels whose fancy name  is hyperglycemia.
